A popular activity poteo, which involves drinking small glasses of wine called poets at the different wine bars around town.  Similar to visiting different tapas bars (or in the Basque region pintxo bars) for their flavors on a night out, this will provide a lovely tour of all the delicious Spanish wines.  As long as you keep the glasses small you can enjoy several different wines before its time to call it a night.  The Casco Viejo, or the Old Quarter and the Licenciado Pozas are areas where you can find the best spots to embark on this kind of evening excursion.

Aste Nagusia Semana Grande

Like other Spanish cities Bilbao also has yearly town festivals.  The two most important of these are the feast of Santa Aqueda in February, which involves a colorful street parade and much merrymaking in the Casco Viejo, and the major Aste Nagusia Semana Grande celebration in August.  The latter is the biggest celebration and well worth planning your visit around.  It features free concerts, dances, theatre performances, fireworks, and Spanish bull fighting.
